An ocean pool gives kids the sea without the surf: real salt water, crabs in the cracks and waves thumping over the wall, but none of the rip. The best ones for families have a separate shallow pool for toddlers, somewhere to sit in the shade, and a cafe or kiosk within reach for the post-swim hot chips. These are our favourites.
We chose pools with a toddlers pool or a properly shallow section, easy access from the car, and toilets nearby. Lifeguards are a bonus, and we've said where they are. Shallow never means unsupervised: rock pools are slippery and the sea can wash over the wall without warning, so stay within arm's reach of small children.
1. North Narrabeen Rock Pool
Best for mixed ages · North Narrabeen, 50 m, Rock pool
A timber boardwalk runs straight down the middle of this 1935 pool, splitting it into a 50 m lap pool on one side and a wide, easy family pool on the other. Older kids can swim proper laps while toddlers paddle next door, and the calm Narrabeen Lagoon entrance is right beside it for a second round of splashing.
Good to know: Change rooms, showers and toilets are on site. Pay-and-display parking is opposite the Lakeside Caravan Park.
2. Thirroul Pool
Best with a lifeguard · Thirroul, 50 m, Ocean pool or baths
A 50 m saltwater pool with a toddlers pool alongside, fully fenced and lifeguarded in season. The fence is rare for a beach pool, and it makes a huge difference when you're keeping an eye on more than one child. The park next door is one of the busiest in the northern Illawarra, and Thirroul's cafes are a short stroll away.
Good to know: It's a seasonal pool: open daily over summer, with shorter hours in autumn and closed in winter. The train station is about ten minutes' walk.
3. Avoca Beach Rock Pool
Best for toddlers · Avoca Beach, Rock pool
Built in 1948 specifically so young children could paddle, this little pool at the south end of Avoca Beach is shallow, sheltered and small enough to see across at a glance. A cafe, playground and toilets are right beside it, so a morning here can run as long as your toddler's patience.
Good to know: The floor is stony, so water shoes help. Mid tide on a calm morning is ideal.
4. Mona Vale Rock Pool
Best for a picnic day · Mona Vale, 30 m, Rock pool
Two pools on the rocks at the north end of Mona Vale Beach: a toddlers pool for the little ones and a 30 m pool for everyone else. Across the road, Apex Park has free electric barbecues, picnic tables and plenty of grass, which makes this an easy all-day family base.
Good to know: Change rooms and toilets are by the pool. Parking is pay-and-display.
5. Canoe Pool
Best in the city · Newcastle, Ocean pool or baths
Right beside Newcastle Ocean Baths, the Canoe Pool is a shallow paddling pool built for children, so the kids can splash while older swimmers do laps next door. It's a few minutes' walk from the city centre and the light rail.
Good to know: Change rooms at the baths open from 5.30am. The baths close every Wednesday for cleaning.
6. Bronte Baths
Best with a park and a beach · Bronte, 30 m, Ocean pool or baths
Bronte's pool has been cut into the rocks since 1887, with a marked lap section and a shallow end for kids. Above it, Bronte Park has shady grass, barbecues and a playground, and the calm, sheltered Bronte Bogey Hole is just across the beach for little swimmers.
Good to know: It gets busy on summer weekends. Toilets, change rooms and hot showers are nearby.
7. Port Kembla Pool
Best for a full day out · Port Kembla, 50 m, Ocean pool or baths
An eight-lane, 50 m saltwater pool with lifeguards in season, a toddlers pool and a gently sloping beach-style entry that little ones can walk into. It also has a Changing Places accessible change room, so it works for families of every kind.
Good to know: Hours and fees are set by Wollongong City Council and change with the season.
8. Bulli Rock Pool
Best for a camping weekend · Bulli, Rock pool
A main pool and a toddlers pool on the rocks below the headland at the north end of Bulli Beach. The beachside cafes are close, and the Bulli Tourist Park is a short walk away, which makes this an easy base for a family weekend on the coast.
Good to know: There are no lifeguards at the pool. Bulli Beach is patrolled in season.
9. MacMasters Beach Rock Pool
Best sandy-bottomed pool · MacMasters Beach, 17 m, Rock pool
A small 1960s pool on the Central Coast with a soft sandy floor that's kind to little feet, and a deeper edge where older kids can practise their strokes. The cafe and amenities nearby make it an easy morning out.
Good to know: It's small and fills up fast on summer holidays, so come early.
10. Black Head Rock Pool
Best regional find · Hallidays Point, 30 m, Ocean pool or baths
At Hallidays Point on the Mid North Coast, a 30 m ocean pool sits beside a separate wading pool for kids. Local volunteers known as Dad's Army have kept it clean and running for decades, and you can thank them with a coin in the donation tin.
Good to know: Entry is free. There are no lifeguards at the pool.
Tides, swell and cleaning days change how every pool behaves, so it's worth a quick check of the council page before a big family outing. And the old rule still applies: three days out of the water after heavy rain.
