What it's like
Picture a full 50 m outdoor lap pool, filled with sea water, with the beach on one side and the escarpment on the other. It's fenced all round, unusual for a beach pool and handy for keeping track of small children, and the shallow toddlers pool sits alongside. A citizens' committee raised money in the late 1930s to replace an older tidal pool cut into the rocks, and the new pool opened in 1940. Sea water still comes in through pipes running about 70 m out to sea.
When to go
From late October to mid-March the pool opens 6am to 7pm every day except Christmas Day. Autumn brings shorter hours and Friday cleaning, and the pool closes for winter from 1 June. In very big seas the incoming water may not be fit for swimming, and the pool can close at short notice.
Getting there and facilities
The pool is on Bath Street, Thirroul, with toilets, change rooms and a beachfront kiosk nearby. Thirroul's cafes are a short stroll away, and the station is about ten minutes' walk.
