North Narrabeen Rockpool sits right where Narrabeen Lagoon meets the sea, a 50 m pool split down the middle by a much-loved timber boardwalk. It's free and open all year, with a proper lap pool on one side for club swimmers and a wider, easier pool on the other for everyone else.

What it's like

Stand on the boardwalk and you've got the lagoon mouth on one side, the surf on the other and swimmers in both directions. The lap side is used by the local swimming clubs in summer and winter; the family side is wider and more forgiving. With a calm lagoon next door, North Narrabeen waited longer than most beaches for a rock pool, and this one was built during the Depression and opened in March 1935. The boardwalk is part of the original design and has been rebuilt many times since.

When to go

Early mornings belong to the lap swimmers and club members. A learn-to-swim program runs from December to the end of February. The pool is out of use from about three hours before each published cleaning time until up to twelve hours after, depending on the seas, so check the roster.

Getting there and facilities

The pool is off Narrabeen Park Parade, with pay-and-display parking opposite the Lakeside Caravan Park. There are change rooms, showers and toilets, and a cafe nearby for after.

Good to know

The pool is unpatrolled. The lagoon entrance can run with strong currents, so stay in the pool rather than swimming out from it.
