Mona Vale Rockpool is really two pools side by side at the northern end of the beach: a shallow toddlers pool and a 30 m pool for older kids and adults. It's free, a Depression-era pool with a park, barbecues and a bike path across the road, so it makes an easy family day.

What it's like
The two pools sit on the rock shelf off Surfview Road, the little one calm and shallow, the bigger one deep enough for a proper swim. This is a family pool more than a lap pool, with children moving between the two all day. It began as a natural rock pool and was enlarged in the 1930s as a Depression-era public works project, and both pools are on the National Trust register.
When to go
A calm mid-morning suits families. The pools close from about three hours before each published cleaning time until up to twelve hours after, depending on the seas, so check the roster.
Getting there and facilities
The pools are off Surfview Road at the northern end of Mona Vale Beach, with change rooms, toilets and pay-and-display parking. Across the road, Apex Park has electric barbecues, picnic tables, a shaded playground and a kids' bike path, and there are cafes on Darley Street.
Good to know
There are no lifeguards at the pools. Keep a close eye on small children near the deeper pool.
