Newport Rockpool is a 50 m rock pool with a natural rock floor at the southern end of Newport Beach, so it feels more like swimming in the sea than in a tank. It's free, with a playground, barbecues and Newport's cafes all close at hand.

What it's like
Under your feet is the rock platform itself rather than smooth concrete, and the water takes on the colour of the sea around it. At 50 m it's long enough for real laps, and on bigger days swell washes over the outer wall. The pool once went by the name Newport Rock Baths and took its present shape in the 1930s.
When to go
Early mornings suit laps and mid-morning suits families. The pool is out of use from about three hours before each published cleaning time until up to twelve hours after, depending on the seas.
Getting there and facilities
Reach the pool by the walkway at the corner of Calvert Parade and The Boulevard, or along the sand from the beach car park. There are change rooms, toilets and pay-and-display parking, plus a playground south of the surf club, grassy areas, electric barbecues and plenty of cafes nearby.
Good to know
No lifeguard watches the pool. The rock floor can be slippery.
