What it's like
The pool sits on the rocks below the southern headland, a good size for a few laps or a lazy float, with the sea washing in when there's swell about. Whale Beach itself is a deep, sheltered bowl backed by steep hills and houses, and on a weekday you'll share it with very few people. It's the kind of place that makes a swim feel like a small escape.
When to go
Calm mornings are best. The pool closes from about three hours before each published cleaning time until up to twelve hours after, depending on the seas.
Getting there and facilities
Access is from The Strand, with pay-and-display parking. There are change rooms and toilets, and barbecues and a playground close by.
Good to know
The pool itself is unpatrolled. The rocks around the edge are slippery.
