Bronte Baths is the Bronte ocean pool on every Sydney swimmer's list: a saltwater pool cut into the rocks at the south end of Bronte Beach, open since 1887, with the open sea breaking just beyond the wall. It's free, with a marked lap section and room to float, and it's beautiful at sunrise.

What it's like
Inside the curving outer wall, a rectangle of about 30 m is marked out with lanes for lap swimmers, while the rest of the pool is a free-form space for floating and watching the waves. In a swell the sea breaks over the wall and showers the deep end in white water. The water isn't heated and drops to around 15°C in winter, which hasn't stopped the year-round regulars. The baths opened in 1887, built for about £150, with entry then costing fourpence; they were privately run until the 1960s.
When to go
Open every day except Wednesday, when cleaning starts about four hours before low tide: from 5am if low tide is in the morning, or 10am if it's in the afternoon. Early mornings belong to lap and winter swimmers, and summer afternoons are packed.
Getting there and facilities
The baths are at the southern end of Bronte Beach, below Bronte Park, with toilets, change rooms and hot showers nearby. The park has barbecues and a playground, and the cafes across the road do a brisk trade in post-swim coffees. Buses run from Bondi Junction, and the Bondi to Coogee walk passes right by.
Good to know
Entry is free. The rocks around the edge are slippery, and waves can come over the wall without warning in a big swell.
