The Canoe Pool is a broad, shallow paddling pool beside Newcastle Ocean Baths, built for small children to splash safely while the surf breaks just beyond the wall. It's free, right on the edge of the city, and a classic Newcastle summer outing for families.

What it's like
Picture a wide, knee-deep sea pool on the rock platform at Newcastle East, with toddlers sitting in the shallows and parents watching from the edge. The big ocean baths are next door for grown-ups wanting a proper swim, so families can split up and still keep each other in sight. The platform once held another tiny bathing pool, the Cowrie Hole.
When to go
Calm summer days are ideal for small children. The neighbouring ocean baths close all day on Wednesdays for cleaning, so check the notices for the Canoe Pool too.
Getting there and facilities
The pool is on Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle East, next to the ocean baths, whose change rooms open daily from 5.30am. There's free and paid parking nearby, and the Newcastle Beach light rail stop is a short walk.
Good to know
The pool is unpatrolled. Keep children within reach at all times.
