Merewether Ocean Baths are the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere: a vast main pool of roughly 100 by 50 metres, a lap section and a separate learners pool, all free. They're open around the clock except Thursdays, and at sunrise they may be the finest place to swim in Newcastle.

What it's like
The scale is what gets you. The main pool spreads out below the headland at the southern end of Merewether Beach, with lane ropes at one end for lap swimmers and acres of open water for everyone else. A smaller, shallower learners pool sits alongside for children. In a swell, waves break over the outer wall and send spray across the water, and the early light turns the whole thing gold. A smaller set of baths stood on the rock shelf here in the 1920s; the present baths opened in 1935.
When to go
Any day except Thursday, when the baths close all day for cleaning. Early morning is the classic time for laps and sunrise. A lifeguard is on duty from 9am to 5.30pm between late September and late April.
Getting there and facilities
The baths are at the end of Henderson Parade, Merewether. Change rooms open daily from 5.30am, with toilets and showers. Free timed parking near the baths and along the beachfront fills fast on warm weekends, so come early.
Good to know
