There's no better way to start the day than laps in salt water while the sun comes up over the sea. NSW has dozens of ocean pools, but only some are built for proper training: full 50 m lengths, painted lanes and water calm enough to hold a rhythm. These are the ones the early-morning regulars swear by.
We picked 50 m pools (or close to it) with lane markings or enough clear water to swim straight, reliable conditions, and showers to rinse off after. Most are free. Ocean pools change with the tide and swell, so the far lane can get choppy on a big day.
1. Bondi Icebergs Pool
Best known · Bondi Beach, 50 m, Ocean pool or baths
The most photographed lap pool in the country, and it earns it. A 50 m pool cut into the rocks at the south end of Bondi, with waves crashing over the wall and the whole beach unfolding beside you. Entry is paid but includes the sauna, hot showers and lockers, which is the real luxury on a winter morning.
Good to know: Closed most Thursdays for cleaning. Go at opening time for clear lanes.
2. South Curl Curl Rock Pool
Best on the Northern Beaches · South Curl Curl, 50 m, Rock pool
An eight-lane, Olympic-length pool reshaped in 1966 for competition, with a separate shallow area so the lap lanes stay clear. Locals rate it as the best lap pool on the peninsula. Swell washes over the outer wall, which keeps the water fresh.
Good to know: Check the council's cleaning roster: the pool is out of use for several hours either side of each clean.
3. Woonona Rock Pool
Best set up like a real pool · Woonona, 50 m, Rock pool
With lane markings, starting blocks and a pavilion above, Woonona is about as close as a rock pool gets to a proper swimming pool. It opened in 1929 after volunteers started digging it by hand, and it's usually swimmable even at high tide.
Good to know: Toilets, change rooms and showers are in the pavilion.
4. Merewether Ocean Baths
Best for long, open swims · Merewether, Ocean pool or baths
Newcastle's vast baths are often called the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, with a lane section for laps and acres of open water around it. Sunrise sessions here, with spray coming over the wall, are a Newcastle ritual.
Good to know: Open around the clock except Thursdays, when they close for cleaning. Change rooms open from 5.30am.
5. Port Kembla Pool
Best with lifeguards · Port Kembla, 50 m, Ocean pool or baths
Eight lanes, 50 m and lifeguarded in season, so you can swim hard without worrying about the sea. It's a serious training pool with a relaxed beach-town feel.
Good to know: Hours change with the season. Check before an early start.
6. Bilgola Rock Pool
Best for a quiet swim · Bilgola Beach, 50 m, Rock pool
Fifty metres and eight lanes at the bottom of a green valley, on one of the quietest beaches on the Northern Beaches. You'll often have a lane to yourself on a weekday morning.
Good to know: Parking is pay-and-display off The Serpentine.
7. Continental Pool
Best in Wollongong · North Wollongong, 50 m, Ocean pool or baths
Wollongong's grand saltwater pool on the Blue Mile has a 50 m pool, a 45 m pool and lifeguards on duty, all a short walk from the harbour. The flat foreshore path makes it a good run-swim combination.
Good to know: The 45 m pool has a ramp entry if you need it.
8. Pheasant Point Pool
Best on the South Coast · Kiama, 50 m, Ocean pool or baths
Kiama's 50 m ocean pool at Black Beach looks over the harbour and the sea, and it's the town's serious lap pool. It's about ten minutes' walk from Kiama station, so you can do it as a day trip from Sydney by train.
Good to know: No lifeguards. Calm mornings are best.
9. Gunnamatta Bay Baths
Best calm-water option · Cronulla, 50 m, Harbour or river baths
When the surf is up at Cronulla, cross the peninsula to this netted 50 m enclosure on the calm Port Hacking side. Clubs train here year round, and Cronulla station is a few minutes' walk.
Good to know: Water quality drops after rain. Check Beachwatch after storms.
10. North Narrabeen Rock Pool
Best for club swimmers · North Narrabeen, 50 m, Rock pool
The boardwalk splits North Narrabeen into a 50 m lap pool and a family pool, so the lanes stay clear. Local swimming clubs have raced here since 1935, and they still do, summer and winter.
Good to know: Council's cleaning roster puts the pool out of use for a few hours before each clean.
Ocean pools have no lane ropes most of the time, and the water temperature follows the sea, from about 18°C in winter to 24°C in late summer. A pair of tinted goggles makes the sunrise sessions a lot more pleasant.
