What it's like
The pool is long and deep, built for serious swimming, with the cliff face throwing welcome shade over the water on summer afternoons. Raised viewing steps at the town end hark back to its swimming carnival days. In the late 1800s Pheasant Point was where Kiama's women bathed, while the men used the rock pool at Blowhole Point across the harbour. The Olympic-size pool for mixed bathing came later, begun in 1934 as an unemployment relief project.
When to go
Calm mornings are best for laps. Hot afternoons are pleasant thanks to the shade from the cliff.
Getting there and facilities
The pool is at Black Beach Reserve, Kiama, a 15-minute walk around the harbour from the blowhole or about ten minutes from Kiama station. The town's cafes are close by.
Good to know
There are no lifeguards at the pool. It's a different pool from Continental Pool in North Wollongong.
