Queenscliff Rockpool is a 50 m rock pool tucked against the cliff at the northern end of Manly's long beach, sheltered from the wind and a 20-minute stroll from the ferry. It's free, with a widened ramp from the beach, and good for laps when the wind is howling elsewhere.

What it's like
Concrete walls frame the pool on every side, and the cliff behind it blocks the wind on most days, which regulars appreciate on cool mornings. It's 50 m long with eight lanes, though the sides aren't quite parallel, so the lanes vary a little. Waves wash over the outer wall at high tide. Built in 1937, it belongs to the wave of pools that followed the Depression.
When to go
Early mornings are the quietest time. The pool is out of use for several hours around each clean, on dates published ahead, so check the roster.
Getting there and facilities
Walk north along the beachfront from Manly, about 20 minutes from the wharf, with cafes along the way. A widened ramp leads from the beach, the pool stairs have been modified, and there's a ladder at the deep end. Street parking is limited.
Good to know
There are no lifeguards at the pool itself, though Queenscliff Beach is patrolled in season. The pool floor gets slippery with weed between cleans.
