Fairlight Rockpool is a harbourside rock pool on the Manly to Spit walk, about 15 minutes west of Manly Wharf, with a paddling pool beside it for toddlers. It's free, calm and a lovely alternative to the surf, with ferries gliding past as you swim.

What it's like
This pool sits on Sydney Harbour, not the ocean, so there's no swell crashing over the wall and the water is usually glassy. The main pool is about 30 m long, good for easy laps, and the small paddling pool next to it keeps little ones happy. Looking out, you get North Harbour, the headlands and the Manly ferries coming and going. It was officially opened in 1927.
When to go
Any calm day works, apart from Thursdays, when it closes for cleaning. Signs go up the day before, and a closed sign stays while the pool refills. Mornings are quietest.
Getting there and facilities
Walk about 15 minutes west from Manly Wharf along the shoreline path, or come in on the Manly Scenic Walkway from the Spit Bridge. Toilets and warm showers are nearby. There's no cafe on Fairlight Beach, so bring a coffee from Manly.
Good to know
There are no lifeguards. The edges are slippery with weed.
