Freshwater Rockpool is a 50 m rock pool at the foot of the cliff at the northern end of Freshwater Beach, the beach where Duke Kahanamoku introduced Australians to board surfing in 1914. It's free and evenly deep, which makes it a lap swimmer's favourite.

What it's like
The pool runs 50 m along the base of a small cliff and holds around 1.6 m of water at both ends, so you can swim steady laps without the floor rising to meet you. In a swell, waves wash over the wall and keep things lively. Freshwater has a big place in surfing history: in December 1914 the Hawaiian swimmer Duke Kahanamoku gave a demonstration here on a board shaped from local timber. His statue stands on the headland, and one of his boards is kept at the surf club.
When to go
Early mornings are popular with lap swimmers. A sign goes up while the pool refills after cleaning, and the dates are on the published roster.
Getting there and facilities
The pool is at 4 Lumsdaine Drive, Freshwater, with a shower, toilets and an accessible playground at the beach, and cafes in Freshwater village up the hill. Buses run from Manly, about ten minutes away.
Good to know
The pool itself is unpatrolled. Parking near the beach fills quickly in summer.
