Coalcliff Rock Pool is the northernmost of Wollongong's rock pools, a main pool and a toddlers pool on a broad platform with the escarpment rising sheer behind. It's free, a few minutes from the Sea Cliff Bridge, and as dramatic a place to swim as anywhere on the NSW coast.

What it's like

Few pools have a backdrop like this. Green cliffs climb straight up behind the platform, the open sea rolls in on the other side, and on a bright morning the water in the pool turns a clear, glassy blue. There's a main pool for laps, a small toddlers pool beside it, a raised shower area and a viewing platform. Waves wash in at high tide and in any decent swell. The village grew up around the Coalcliff colliery, which worked from 1878 until 1992, and the pool still feels very much like the locals' own.

When to go

A calm morning at mid to low tide is best. The pool closes while it's cleaned, on dates that shift with the sea and weather, so check Wollongong City Council's page on the day. Pair it with a walk or drive across the Sea Cliff Bridge, just to the south.

Getting there and facilities

The pool is an easy walk down from Paterson Road, Coalcliff. There's free parking at Leeder Park and by the surf club. Coalcliff station, on the South Coast line, is a short walk uphill, so this is an easy train trip from Sydney.

Good to know

No lifeguard watches the pool. The platform is slippery and waves can surge across it, so keep children close.
