Bulgo Pool is a small rock pool cut into the platform beyond the old fishing shacks at Bulgo Beach, in the southern Royal National Park near Otford. You can only reach it on foot, down a cliff track from Otford, and the reward is a wild, empty stretch of coast with no facilities at all.

What it's like
Bulgo Beach is one of the few shack villages left in the Royal National Park, a cluster of heritage-listed cabins tucked below the cliffs, and walking past them feels like stepping into the 1930s. The pool sits on the rock platform south of the shacks, made by the shack community as a safe place for children to swim and later blasted out larger. The open sea is right beside it, and on a quiet day you may well have the whole place to yourself.
When to go
Low to mid tide on a calm day, when the rock shelf is safest to cross and waves aren't washing into the pool. Leave plenty of daylight and energy for the climb back up.
Getting there and facilities
Catch the train to Otford, or park in the village, then walk to the cliff track near Otford Lookout. The walk down to Bulgo Beach takes about 25 minutes, then follow the beach south past the shacks and along the rock shelf to the pool. There are no toilets, water or shops at the beach; Otford is the nearest.
Good to know
The shacks are private, so keep to the track and the beach. There are no lifeguards and the shelf is exposed to waves.
