The South Maroubra rock pools are two small rings of rock on the shore at the southern end of Maroubra Beach, old-fashioned swimming holes rather than built pools. They're free and quiet, and they come into their own at mid tide on a calm day.

What it's like
There are no walls, floors or lane ropes here, just two rings of rocks holding the sea in place on the shore. At high tide they almost vanish, and at low tide they can be too shallow to swim, so they suit locals who know the tides. On the right day it's a peaceful spot for a dip, well away from the main beach crowd.
When to go
Mid tide on a calm day is the sweet spot. Avoid any real swell.
Getting there and facilities
Walk to the southern end of Maroubra Beach. Toilets, showers and cafes are along the Maroubra beachfront.
Good to know
The pools aren't cleaned or maintained, so expect weed and sand. Maroubra Beach is patrolled in season, but not this corner of rocks.
