The pool, drawn to scale

Bruce Steer Pool is a netted saltwater enclosure about 150 m long on the western side of Bermagui Point, sheltered, gentle and a short stroll from the main street. It's free, with a ramp and handrails into the water, and makes the calm-water partner to Bermagui's wilder Blue Pool.

What it's like

The net runs out from a small sandy beach at the harbour entrance, enclosing a long stretch of flat, clear water that suits morning laps as much as toddlers paddling at the edge. When the open coast is rough and the Blue Pool is taking waves, this is where locals swim. It's named after Colonel John Mansel Bruce Steer, who led the push for improvements to Bermagui's harbour.

When to go

Mornings are calm and quiet, and it's good on days when the swell rules out the ocean pools. Mid to high tide gives the most water over the sand.

Getting there and facilities

The pool is on Lamont Street at the Bermagui Harbour entrance, about ten minutes' walk from the Blue Pool. There's level and accessible parking, an all-abilities amenities block, toilets, shade, seating and a picnic area. A ramp with handrails gives wheelchair access into the water.

Good to know

Entry is free and there are no lifeguards. Sharp rocks and oyster shells line the southern side at low tide, and storms have damaged the net before, so look for any closure signs.
