What it's like
The boardwalk arcs around the enclosure, so you can walk out over the water, climb down and swim back under it to the shark net. The water is clear, and the beach beside it is one of Sydney's favourite family beaches. Public baths have been here since the late 1890s; they were leased to Robert Shearer and known for years as Shearer's Baths. The Bathers Pavilion, built in 1928 and 1929, is on the State Heritage Register and now holds a restaurant and cafe.
When to go
Come in the morning, when the harbour is glassy and the car park still has spaces. Summer weekends are packed and parking turns into a contest. Give the water a few days after heavy rain.
Getting there and facilities
The baths are on The Esplanade, Balmoral, with cafes, restaurants and takeaway along the waterfront. Buses run to Balmoral from Mosman and the city.
Good to know
There's no surf, but there are no lifeguards at the baths either. Keep an eye on small children in the deeper water near the net.
